The scienceContinuous protein evolution

Nature found a way.
We’re giving it pace.

Proteins power modern medicine, manufacturing and diagnostics. Engineering them is still a slow cycle of mutation, testing and repetition.

We’re developing a platform for Phage-Assisted Continuous Evolution (PACE), connecting a protein’s desired function to a bacteriophage’s ability to reproduce. The better the function, the stronger the selection.

How PACE works

Let biology do the searching.
Keep the process moving.

Meet the platform
  1. 01 Program

    Link function to survival.

Engineer phages so their ability to reproduce depends on the protein function we want to evolve.

  2. 02 Diversify

    Make variation continuous.

Introduce genetic variation while phages circulate through miniature reaction vessels.

  3. 03 Select

    Let better variants thrive.

Functional variants replicate. Continuous flow carries out the selection, generation after generation.

  4. 04 Repeat

    Observe. Keep evolving.

Fluorescence provides a readout of activity while our control system keeps the experiment running.

Our platformDesigned and built in-house

One platform.
Every part, connected.

Continuous evolution needs more than biology. We’re bringing the entire experiment together, from the reaction vessel to the control software.

01

Custom hardware

Built around
the biology.

Our miniature lagoon reactors provide independent evolution channels, with carefully controlled culture conditions and continuous flow.

02

Precision fluidics

Keep the
conditions right.

Peristaltic pumps and optical density sensors work together to regulate feeding and monitor bacterial growth.

03

Automation software

Close the
feedback loop.

Our in-house control stack brings together real-time monitoring, pump control and data logging. It is designed for experiments that run for days.

Current milestone

Built. Assembled.
Preparing for proof of concept.

Our first planned evolution run targets T7 RNA polymerase, adapting it to recognise a new genetic target.

Three founders.
A shared drive to build.

What began as a protein expression experiment at the ETH Student Project House grew into an ambition to rethink how proteins are engineered.

Experiments & validation

Built from curiosity.
Developed in Zürich.

We design, build and test at the Student Project House Life Science Lab on ETH Zürich’s Hönggerberg campus. Our platform has been developed from scratch by our team, with approximately a year of self-funded work.
